Ricky Rojas to Reprise Santiago Role in Broadway’s ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’

Ricky Rojas is set to return to the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” rejoining the company beginning January 27 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Rojas will once again portray Santiago, a role he originated during the musical’s pre-Broadway engagement in Boston in 2018 before reprising it when the production transferred to Broadway in 2019. His upcoming run marks another return to the role, following limited engagements at the Hirschfeld Theatre in 2023 and 2024.

He will succeed Pepe Muñoz, who is scheduled to give his final performance as Santiago on January 25.

Rojas will join a cast that also includes Bob The Drag Queen, who is making a Broadway debut as Harold Zidler. The current company is led by Meg Donnelly as Satine and Christian Douglas as Christian, with David Harris portraying The Duke of Monroth, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, and Samantha Dodemaide as Nini.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” opened on Broadway in 2019 following a successful tryout in Boston. The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film went on to receive 14 Tony Award nominations in 2020 and won 10 awards, including Best Musical.

The production is directed by Alex Timbers and features a book by John Logan, based on Luhrmann’s film. Choreography is by Sonya Tayeh.

The music team includes musical supervisor Justin Levine, music producer Matt Stine, and music director Andrew Graham. Orchestrations were created by Levine, Stine, Katie Kresek, and Charlie Rosen, with dance arrangements by Levine and Stine.

The creative team also features scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designer Peter Hylenski, hair designer David Brian Brown, and makeup designer Sarah Cimino. Creative services are provided by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel, with star casting by Whitley Theatrical.
