Singer Oliver Tree Dies at 32, Among Six Killed in Fiery Helicopter Crash

Electro indie-pop singer, songwriter, producer, and filmmaker Oliver Tree has died at 32-years-old in a fiery helicopter crash on Sunday.

Tree was among six fatalities in a crash involving two helicopters that collided in Rio de Janeiro, CNN Brazil reports. The news outlet added that the fatalities include five people in one helicopter, as well as the pilot of the other aircraft. Lucas Vignale, Gaspar Prim, and Lucas Brito Chaves were among the passengers who died in the accident, while Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac were the pilots, CNN Brazil reports.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Civil Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the crash.

“The investigation is ongoing at the 42nd Police Precinct,” police said. “A forensic examination was conducted at the scene, and agents are awaiting the report from the Center for Investigation of Aeronautical Accidents. The bodies of the six victims will undergo forensic examination identification, which will be compared to data in the records of the Air Operations Center.”

The investigation will determine the cause of the aircraft crash.

According to Rio de Janeiro’s Military Fire Department, one of the helicopters crashed into the parking lot of a car dealership, which ignited a fire. The Associated Press reported that there were no survivors.

At the time of his death, Tree was in the middle of a world tour; he recently performed in Sao Paulo on June 6 and was set to take the stage next on July 1 in Lisbon. The trek was slated to run through late October, including gigs across Europe, the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and China.

Tree, who has amassed 11.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, first garnered attention from his 2020 debut LP Ugly is Beautiful, which featured tracks “Life Goes On,” “Alien Boy,” and “Miss You.” He continued with records Cowboy Tears and Alone In A Crowd, as well as his most recent LP, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, which just dropped in April. His final record was billed as his most ambitious project to-date; the LP was recorded over two years across seven continents and 82 countries.

He was best known for genre-bending within songs, blending together catchy electronic and pop-punk with silly, bizarre personas. One thing is for sure: Tree will be remembered as being authentically true to himself — in his lyricism and on stage.
