Tracee Ellis Ross to Make Broadway Debut in ‘Every Brilliant Thing’

Tracee Ellis Ross will make her Broadway debut this summer in “Every Brilliant Thing,” joining the rotating cast of the solo play at the Hudson Theatre.

Ross is scheduled to begin performances July 7 and will appear through August 9. She takes over the role from Mariska Hargitay, who is set to perform from May 26 to July 5. Daniel Radcliffe currently leads the production and will continue through May 24.

The play is written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe, with direction by Macmillan and Jeremy Herrin.

“Every Brilliant Thing” follows a narrator reflecting on their life while navigating family challenges, including a strained relationship with a parent and a mother struggling with mental health. The character begins creating a list of positive moments and small joys, a practice that continues into adulthood and shapes their relationships and outlook.

The production first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it ran for multiple sold-out seasons. It later transferred Off-Broadway to the Barrow Street Theatre in 2014. A filmed version of that run aired on HBO, featuring Donahoe. The play returned to Edinburgh in 2024 and was highlighted as a notable selection, before making its West End debut at @sohoplace with a rotating group of performers.

The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Vicki Mortimer, lighting designer Jack Knowles, and sound designer Tom Gibbons. Casting is by Jessica Ronane, and Jhanaë K-C Bonnick serves as production stage manager.

The production is produced by Second Half Productions, Seaview, and Gavin Kalin Productions.
