Broadway’s ‘Ragtime’ Revival Extends Run

The Broadway revival of “Ragtime” has announced another extension for the Lincoln Center Theater production. The musical will now run at the Vivian Beaumont Theater through August 2.

The musical features a leading cast that includes Joshua Henry as Coalhouse Walker, Jr., Caissie Levy as Mother, and Brandon Uranowitz as Tateh. Colin Donnell appears as Father, and Nichelle Lewis plays Sarah. The principal cast also includes Ben Levi Ross as Mother’s Younger Brother, Julie Benko as Emma Goldman, John Clay III as Booker T. Washington, and Rodd Cyrus as Harry Houdini.

Several of these performers originated their roles earlier in the revival’s New York City Center run. Shaina Taub, who first portrayed Emma Goldman in that staging, is scheduled to return to the Broadway company beginning March 31.

The Broadway cast also includes Anna Grace Barlow as Evelyn Nesbit, Nick Barrington as The Little Boy, and Ellie May Sennett as The Little Girl. A large ensemble supports the production’s sweeping narrative and musical numbers. Casting for the revival is by The Telsey Office’s Craig Burns.

Based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow, “Ragtime” blends fictional characters with real historical figures. The story takes place in New York City at the start of the 20th century. It follows several intersecting lives during a time of social and political change.

The production includes choreography by Ellenore Scott and scenic design by David Korins. Costume design is by Linda Cho. Lighting is designed by Adam Honoré and Donald Holder. Sound design is by Kai Harada, with projection design by 59 Studio and hair and wig design by Tom Watson.

Music director James Moore leads a 28-piece orchestra. The musicians perform the original orchestrations by William David Brohn. Vocal arrangements are by composer Stephen Flaherty.

“Ragtime” first premiered on Broadway in 1998 after a pre-Broadway engagement in Toronto. The original cast included Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, and Marin Mazzie. The production received multiple Tony Awards, including wins for Terrence McNally’s book and the score by Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.

The current revival is produced by Lincoln Center Theater in association with Tom Kirdahy, Kevin Ryan, Robert Greenblatt, and Lamar Richardson. With its latest extension, audiences will have additional time to see one of Broadway’s most ambitious musical revivals of the season.
